Main features

  • Waterproof exterior and fleece interior
  • Protects from cold, wind and rain
  • Reflective piping and LED light
  • For dogs of all sizes (5 sizes)

When winter arrives, especially if you live in an area where the climate is harsh, you need a raincoat that not only prevents your dog from getting wet, but also protects him from the cold. In this case, one of the best options you can find in the market is the North Country waterproof coat for dogs of the Kurgo brand, a high quality garment that will keep your furry dog warm, comfortable and dry.

Made from a tough 1200 denier RipStop fabric on the outside, it has a soft fleece lining on the inside, so when your dog is wearing this raincoat he will be perfectly protected from wind and cold. It is totally waterproof, which makes it an ideal garment for those winter days when it is raining or snowing.

Another very interesting feature of this excellent dog raincoat is that it has a reflective piping, both along the neck and the sides, as well as a strip with an LED light on the back. All this makes your four-legged friend visible in low visibility conditions, from any angle.

Putting on and taking off the North Country raincoat to the dog is very easy, thanks to its two quick release buckles that buckle up on both sides, and can be adjusted as needed. This, together with the design of the garment, which has two clips on the back, makes it adapt perfectly to the body of your dog.

Another detail that I love is that in the back area it has a double zippered opening, which you can adjust to the necessary height and size, to be able to use any collar or harness.

The raincoat can be washed by hand or in the washing machine, in a program for delicate clothes. To do this, you must first remove the LED light. It should not be dried in the dryer. The available sizes are as follows:

Premium quality 4 legged dog raincoat : Hurtta Slush Combat Suit

Main features

  • High quality rain jacket with 4 legs
  • Keeps the whole body completely dry
  • Lightweight, comfortable and adjustable
  • Multiple sizes: for all types of dogs

It must be recognised that, although raincoats are quite effective in preventing our dogs from getting wet on rainy days, there are parts of their body that are inevitably soaked, especially if they have long hair. If you live in a place where it rains or snows a lot, and you don’t want your furry little one to get wet, a four-legged dog raincoat will be very useful, especially if its quality is as high as in the case of Hurtta’s Slush Combat Suit.

This excellent dog raincoat covering all 4 legs is very lightweight, giving your canine friend total freedom of movement. It is made of a high performance fabric, which has the breathable and waterproof Houndtex coating, patented by Hurtta, which provides effective protection against water, mud and dirt, keeping the dog’s coat and skin clean and dry, so you won’t need to bathe your dog as often.

The raincoat is adjustable at the waist, neck and legs of the dog, so you can run and play without being disturbed, because the material it is made of is soft. For your dog’s safety, it has reflective drawings, which have been placed in strategic areas, so that it is visible after dark. There is an opening in the back area so you can attach the strap to a harness.

Hurtta Slush Combat Suit – how to put on a dog 🙂

As it is a pawed raincoat, it needs to adapt perfectly to the dog’s body. For this reason, it is available in a huge number of different sizes, which makes it essential that you measure your dog very well. The truth is that this diversity in sizing can be somewhat confusing.

Below I specify the measurements of each of the existing sizes, with some examples of breeds that would be good for each one of them; keep in mind, however, that the indication of breeds is merely a guide: you must measure your dog well before buying the raincoat.

  • Size 8S: Chest size 42 cm. Neck contour 34 cm. Back length 20 cm. Front legs 4 cm. Hind legs 5 cm. (Chihuahua, Affenpinscher, Yorkshire Terrier)

  • Size 32M: Chest size 120 cm. Neck contour 104 cm. Back length 80 cm. Front legs 30 cm. Hind legs 28 cm. (Spanish Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane)

To find the right size for your dog, the first thing you should do is determine the length of your back, using a tape measure from the base of your neck to the base of your tail. This is the most important measure in a raincoat with legs for dogs, as it is essential that it covers the whole back, but without being over.

Then measure the contour of the chest by wrapping the tape measure around the body of the dog behind the front legs at the widest point of the chest. As for the contour of the neck, you must surround it with the tape measure at the widest part (where it joins the body). Add a few inches to the measurement, otherwise the raincoat would be too tight and the dog would be uncomfortable.

As for the paws, you should measure your dog’s front legs, placing the tape measure on the inside, from the point where the paw joins the body to just above what would be the ankle joint.

Multifunctional Neoprene Dog Raincoat : Julius-K9

Main features

  • 3 in 1 multi-functional rain jacket
  • Made of neoprene
  • You don’t need to harness or collar your dog
  • For dogs of all sizes (4 sizes)

With this great multi-functional dog rain jacket from Julius K-9 you will not only protect your furry dog from the rain, but it will also serve you in other situations, so it will be like having three products in one.

As it is made of high quality neoprene, it is a waterproof garment, and keeps the dog protected from the cold. For this reason you can use it perfectly as a raincoat when you go for a walk with your four-legged friend on rainy days. However, this is not the only use you can make of this versatile garment.

For starters, when your dog is wearing it you won’t need to put a collar or harness on it, as it comes with two sturdy rings where you can comfortably attach the leash. You can rest assured that your dog will not only be comfortable, but also safe, as the raincoat is fastened on one side by two robust straps with quick release buckles, as well as in the chest area.

In addition to this, the raincoat comes with two foam pads on the chest and back, which you can take off and put on at your convenience. With these pads on, it will become an excellent dog life jacket that will help your dog float when it swims. This is a feature that will also be great if your furry dog needs to do hydrotherapy, a very beneficial activity for dogs with osteoarthritis, neurological problems, muscle aches, etc.

IDC® Multifunctional dog vest 3 in 1, made in EU

The raincoat has a large handle on the back that can be a great help in the above mentioned hydrotherapy sessions, but also if you need to lift your dog, in case he has mobility problems, and needs assistance to go up or down stairs, or to get into a car, for example, because thanks to the pads I mentioned above, the pressure is distributed all over his body, so you will not hurt your four-legged friend when lifting him.

Buying guide: how to choose the ideal raincoat for your dog

If you live in a region where it rains often, you might consider buying a raincoat for your dog, especially when the coldest months of the year are approaching. And that’s because getting wet, especially when temperatures are not very high, is not only uncomfortable for the dog, but for us, that when we get home we will have to dry and clean it very well … especially if it has long hair.

Throughout this shopping guide we will talk about the different factors that we must take into account when buying a dog raincoat, and we will see some tips to enjoy a good walk in the company of our furry on rainy days.

Is it really necessary to put a raincoat on my dog?

When it rains, humans protect themselves from the water by using umbrellas or raincoats; however, some people do not see the need to do the same with their dogs. It is true that our canine friends incorporate a fur coat that protects them from both cold and heat, and that in nature you will never see a wolf, for example, in a raincoat. But, after all, our dogs are not wolves, and they do not live in the forest.

It is true that dogs, in general, are more resistant than us to the inclemency of the weather, and they are not going to catch a cold if they get a little bit wet, but if the rain is heavy and it is cold they can have a bad time, sometimes showing symptoms of hypothermia.

Of course, not all dogs are so sensitive to the cold. Obviously, there are breeds such as huskies or Alaska malamute, for example, which have a very thick, double-layered coat, which is ideal for withstanding very cold climates, so they will have no problem getting wet in winter.

However, there are other breeds, such as greyhounds, chihuahuas, Chinese crestees or Yorkshires, to name a few, which are very much affected by the cold and need protection when it rains.

But even if you have a dog that is very resistant to the cold and enjoys walking in the rain, nobody likes coming home with a dog that is soaked and dirty with mud, especially if it has a thick, long coat. A raincoat is very practical in this sense, since you will only have to dry the legs and those parts of the body that are not covered, but it will save you a lot of work and time.

What to consider when buying a dog raincoat

When buying a raincoat for your dog, there are several factors to consider. The aim is to keep your dog as dry as possible, and at a good temperature, but it’s also very important that he’s comfortable when you’re wearing him, otherwise he’ll reject you. In this section we will go over some of the things you should consider when choosing your furry friend’s raincoat.

Your dog’s characteristics

Without a doubt this point is the most important, and also the most obvious: a French bulldog will not need the same type of raincoat as a German shepherd, for example: on the one hand because their sizes are very different, but also because the French bulldog, having a very short coat is more sensitive to the cold than the German shepherd, who has a thick double coat, so he is more prepared for low temperatures.

Try to make it as adjustable as possible

It is important that the raincoat you choose adapts as perfectly as possible to your dog’s body, so it is advisable to look for one that has straps, elastic or velcro, that allow you to adjust it to certain parts of his body, so that it is not too loose or too tight, giving him total freedom of movement. Your dog must be comfortable wearing his raincoat, or he won’t want to wear it.

Type of lining

Some raincoats have a fleece lining or similar material inside to keep your dog warm. However, this is not always necessary. On the one hand, there are dogs that do not need this extra protection, since they have a thick coat that prevents them from getting cold. These dogs just need a raincoat to keep them from getting wet, but nothing else. However, there are breeds that do need a garment to keep them warm, as they lack double coats, or have very short hair.

Another question when choosing a raincoat with or without lining is the time of year you will use it, and even the climate of the region where you live. If you’re looking for a raincoat to protect your furry friend from the spring or summer rains, one with a lining could make him very hot, and the same goes for where you live if the winters are very mild.

Belt access

When you put your dog in a raincoat to go for a walk, you must be able to hook it up to a leash, and that’s why it’s interesting that the raincoat has an opening in the back so you can access the ring of its harness or its collar. Some raincoat models have their own built-in ring for this purpose, but this is not usually the case.

Reflective surfaces

This is another feature that most dog raincoats have, and it is very practical, as it will make your dog visible when it gets dark, and we already know that in winter it gets dark very early, so it is very likely that you will have a good time with your dog in the street at night. If your raincoat has reflective stitching, piping or patterns, you can see where it is at all times, should you drop it, and so can others.

Hoods and high collars

Some dogs don’t like to get their faces wet, and in these cases it may be a good idea to buy a raincoat that has a hood, or comes with a collar that can be pulled up to cover the head and ears. Others, however, don’t like to have anything on their mind: you know your dog better than anyone else.

How to measure your dog for a raincoat size

When choosing a raincoat for your dog you need to make sure you get the size that fits him best. Although I have given examples of breeds in some of the products in this article, this is only indicative, as two dogs of the same breed can have different measurements; so it is best to measure your furry one carefully, using a tape measure.

To measure your dog correctly, you should choose a time when he is calm and relaxed. Make him stand up, and start by measuring the length of his back, from the base of his neck to the base of his tail.

Once you’ve measured the length of your back, it’s the turn of your chest. To measure it, surround your dog’s body with the tape measure, placing it behind his front paws on the widest part of his chest. Keep in mind that the raincoat should be tight, but not too tight: it should be loose enough for your dog to move around freely and comfortably.

The contour of the neck is measured by the widest part, where the neck meets the body. As with the chest area, you should be aware that the raincoat should not be too tight, or it will be uncomfortable for your dog.

If you are thinking of buying a raincoat with legs for dogs, in addition to the above measurements you will also have to measure the front legs. To do this you must place the tape measure on the inside, measuring from the point where the leg joins the body to a little above the ankle joint.

How to get your dog to accept his new raincoat

Even if you’re convinced that putting your dog in a raincoat is a great idea, since it will keep him dry, clean and warm when it rains, he may not feel the same way. Let’s face it, putting on clothes is not something very natural for our canine friends, however practical it may seem to us.

In that sense I have been very lucky with my dog Rufus: the first time I put him a raincoat he stayed as if nothing happened, we went for a walk and he had no problem to wear it: he ran under the rain happily, and played with his dog friends like any other day.

The bad news is that not all dogs are like Rufus, and some people don’t like the idea of you putting a piece of clothing on them. Don’t despair, with a little patience on your part you’ll get him to accept it… even if it’s reluctantly, and if you’ve chosen his new raincoat well, and it’s adaptable and comfortable, he’ll eventually wear it without a problem.

Your goal is to get your furry friend to associate his new raincoat with something positive, so don’t try to force it on him. If you see that he’s not there for the job, just leave him there, in plain sight, and let him be the one to come and investigate what he is. The moment you see him approaching of his own free will and smell him, give him a treat he likes: a piece of sausage or a dog biscuit, and congratulate him.

After a while, start touching your dog with your raincoat, petting him, and letting him smell it. While you’re doing all this, give him some kind of award and talk to him gently, congratulating him on how well he’s behaving. When you notice that your furry friend is not uncomfortable with the feel of the raincoat on his body, you can move on to the next stage.

It’s time to give your dog his new raincoat! Once you’ve put it on him, reward him with treats and also with words, telling him what a good dog he is and how proud you are of him. Leave it on for a few seconds, and take it off. Repeat the step for several days, extending the time before taking off the raincoat, until you see that he is comfortable enough to go for a good walk in the rain.

And so much for our review of the best dog raincoats you can find on the market today. I hope I have helped you choose the right one for your hairy one, so that you can enjoy long walks in the rain together.
