Buying guide and tips for choosing the right shampoo for your dog

Unlike cats, who manage very well on their own to keep their coat clean, dogs need to take a bath from time to time, and for their skin and coat to be perfectly clean and healthy, we should choose a shampoo that suits their needs.

As you have seen throughout this article, there is a huge variety of dog shampoos on the market, so much so that it can sometimes be a little overwhelming for your human companion to choose the best for their four-legged friend. Throughout this guide I will try to clear up any doubts you may have, to help you buy the ideal shampoo for your dog, as well as giving you a series of tips on bathing.

Why can’t I use my shampoo to bathe my dog?

If you’re new to sharing your life with a dog, it may have crossed your mind to give him a bath using your shampoo. After all, it makes your hair look great, and you may even use a shampoo made from natural ingredients.

This is actually a big mistake: as wonderful as your shampoo is, dogs’ skin and ours are very different, and what’s good for one doesn’t have to be good for the other. Let’s see why it’s not a good idea to bathe a dog in people shampoo.

The skin of humans and dogs has different pH

You’ve probably heard of pH, especially in ads for shampoos or bath gels, which claim to be pH neutral, but… what exactly is pH? And what is pH neutral? I will start by explaining that pH means “Hydrogen potential”, and that its value indicates the concentration of hydrogen present in certain solutions, and serves to measure their acidity or alkalinity.

pH values move on a scale from 0 to 14. The higher the pH, the more alkaline, and the lower, the more acidic. The neutral value is considered to be 7, which is right in the middle of this scale. Our skin, like that of dogs or any other animal, has a certain pH, and to be healthy we must maintain this pH.

The skin has a thin protective layer on its surface known as the “acid mantle”, which is a fundamental factor in the correct balance of the skin’s bacterial flora, keeping it hydrated, soft and flexible, and protecting it from harmful bacteria, fungi or viruses. This acid mantle has a specific pH: in our case it is slightly acidic, with values between 4 and 6; in the case of dogs, it has a value close to neutral or slightly alkaline, ranging between 6.3 and 7.9.

When advertisements for gels or shampoos for humans claim that the product is pH neutral, they really mean that they have a pH that is suitable for human skin (usually between 5.5 and 6). This, for a dog, would be too acidic. Dog shampoos usually have a pH of between 7 and 7.5, which is more suitable for your skin.

Using a shampoo with an inadequate pH could cause alterations in the acid mantle of the dog’s skin, unbalancing it and causing various adverse effects, such as inflammation, flaking, dehydration, dermatitis, skin that is too dry or too oily, etc. For this reason it is essential to use a shampoo specially formulated for the skin of our dogs.

Dogs’ skin is more sensitive than ours

Well, yes, as strange as it may sound, his skin is more sensitive. Basically this is because their epidermis is made up of fewer sub-layers than humans, i.e. it is thinner, so a shampoo formulated for human skin, which normally contains chemicals, can be abrasive to them and weaken and irritate their skin.

It is true that dogs get into all kinds of places, whether it is a bush, a muddy puddle, the river, etc… and they do not damage their skin, thus giving us the feeling that their skin is less sensitive than ours, but this is because their hair protects it. And the hair of dogs is also very different from ours.

In our case, each hair follicle produces only one hair, while in the case of dogs it produces two different types of hair: a primary hair and several secondary hairs (undercoat). Thus, the mantle of the dogs protects its skin perfectly, avoiding that the sun, the rain, the cold, the heat, the insects, etc. damage it. However, if we use the wrong shampoo, the skin could suffer the consequences, and the protection provided by the hair will be useless.

The conclusion of all this, therefore, is clear: we should never use our shampoo to bathe our dog, no matter how good it is and how beautiful and silky our hair is.

How to choose the right shampoo for your dog

It’s already clear to you that when you bathe your furry friend you should use a shampoo specifically formulated for dogs. Now it’s time to choose the most suitable one for him from all the dog shampoos on the market. Let’s see what factors we need to take into account.

What kind of skin does your dog have?

When choosing a shampoo for your dog, you need to consider his skin type. If their skin is soft and elastic, it is healthy, and you can use a neutral dog shampoo. However, if you notice that your dog is scratching too much, if it gets dandruff, or has irritated skin, you should choose a shampoo with a softer formulation, suitable for sensitive skin, containing ingredients such as oats or aloe vera, for example.

Your dog’s hair type

This, no doubt, is a very important factor. A dog with short hair is not the same as a dog with long hair; a coat with hard hair is not the same as one with fine, soft hair; or a straight coat is not the same as a curly or wavy coat, or one with dreadlocks, like that of water dogs.

Apart from the type and length of hair, it is also important to consider colour in some cases, especially in the case of white and black coats, as white hair tends to yellow in some areas, and black hair tends to turn reddish and lose its shine in the sun. There are specific shampoos for these colours, which will help you to keep your dog’s coat spectacular. Similarly, you can also find shampoos that will increase the intensity of the brown mantles.

Keep in mind the age of your dog

Just like humans, dogs’ skin and coat are not the same throughout the different stages of their lives. When they are puppies, dogs have much more delicate skin, and a thinner and softer dog, and will need a special puppy shampoo. Grandparents, on the other hand, may have mobility problems and not be able to cope well with bathing, so a dry dog shampoo could be great for them at this stage.

Problems with bad odors?

Our beloved dogs have a different concept of what a bad smell is than ours, that’s for sure, and they usually enjoy wallowing in things that we find disgusting… this is so, but you have to let dogs be dogs: that’s what shampoos are for.

Some shampoos have deodorizing agents, which instead of masking the odors act on what produces them, eliminating them effectively and leaving in your hair a pleasant aroma.

Does your dog have skin problems?

Many dogs have dermatological problems, and there are specific shampoos that will help improve the condition of their skin. We currently have dog shampoos that are special for damaged skin: hypoallergenic shampoos, for atopic skin, for Malassezia dermatitis or infections, anti-flea, anti-fungal, anti-dandruff, etc. There are even shampoos that can be very helpful during the moulting season so that your dog doesn’t lose so much hair.

Is it necessary to use a dog conditioner?

Most quality dog shampoos are very mild and leave hair moisturised and silky, but in some cases a conditioner can come in handy: for example, if you have a long-haired dog with a tendency to tangle, or if his coat is very dry, undernourished or brittle.

Tips for bathing your dog

Now that you’ve chosen the right shampoo for your dog, it’s time to put it to use and give your four-legged friend a bath. Let’s see the right way to do it so that it is perfectly clean, and with spectacular hair.

  • It’s a good idea to take him for a good walk before you bathe him, or play with him to release his energy, especially if he’s the type that doesn’t find the idea of bathing very appealing. This way, it will be easier for you to be still and calm in the bathtub.
  • Before the bath, give it a good brushing so as to remove as much dead hair as possible. If he has any tangles, try to get rid of them before you start bathing him.
  • Try not to get water in your ears, as it may cause otitis. If necessary, you can put some cotton wool on it.
  • The water should not be completely cold, but neither should it be too hot. It’s best to use warm water.
  • Once you have thoroughly wetted your dog’s coat, apply the shampoo along his entire back, and start rubbing it all over his body, using your fingertips, until it foams. Don’t forget the legs, the pads, and the tail.
  • Rinse with plenty of warm water, until you have removed all the shampoo, as any residue left could irritate your skin.
  • Let your dog shake well, then dry him using a towel, or several, until he is just damp. Then you can dry it with the dryer, or let it air dry.
  • Of course, don’t forget to congratulate your dog and give him a prize for behaving so well during the bath.

How often should I bathe my dog?

The frequency of baths depends on several factors, including the breed, its health status, and whether it is a more or less active dog. For example, dogs that spend a lot of time outside will need to bathe more often than those that live in a flat and spend most of their time inside.

It also depends on the type of hair you have. In general, long haired dogs need more care, as their hair is longer, it can also hide more dust and dirt, so they will need to be bathed more often.

As a general rule, a dog with healthy skin should not bathe more than once a month, if it has long hair, if its hair is short baths can be spaced somewhat more, between a month and a half and two months. Of course, if your dog has gone out and got very dirty for some reason, you’ll need to give him a bath, even if you haven’t done it for long.

If your dog suffers from any skin problems, such as dermatitis, allergies or infections, he may need more frequent baths. In that case, it’s best to consult your vet.

And so much for our review so you can buy your furry dog the best dog shampoo. I hope that I have helped you to solve any doubt you might have about it, and that you have found the shampoo that best suits your dog’s skin and hair type.
